Michael (Mike) Travis Banta, age 69, of Augusta, GA, died on September 1, 2025. Born in Fort Worth, TX, Mike was a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington. For four years, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, advancing to the rank of LTJG.
Following his military service, Mike worked as an analyst for the Department of Defense for 38 years, retiring in December 2022.
Mike’s life was deeply shaped by his love for his family and his Christian faith. As a young man, he enjoyed being a favorite uncle to his nephews and nieces. Mike married in 1997 and raised two daughters with his wife. He found great fulfillment in his role as the provider and protector of his family. Mike was a dedicated member of the church and an avid scholar of theology. For the past two years, he enjoyed teaching Sunday school and serving as a deacon. In his retirement, Mike took pleasure in tending his vegetable garden, growing and canning his crops.
Mike is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kimberley Banta; two daughters, Deborah Banta of SC, and Sarah Banta of PA; his sister Debbie Tipton and husband Rob of MO; his brother Brent Banta of Malaysia, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel. Following the service, all are invited to a luncheon at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4303 Wheeler Road, Martinez, GA 30907.
Burial will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 11 AM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC, 29229.
In lieu of flowers, online donations in the memory of Mike can be made to the Golden Harvest Food Bank of Augusta at goldenharvest.org.
