Michal, 73, a native of Louisville, Georgia, passed away in the early morning hours Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at home surrounded by the love of her family. Michal grew up on her family’s farm as the third of four children, where she developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and for family. As a child and young adult, Michal attended First Baptist Church in Louisville. She also loved fishing, hunting, helping around the farm, and spending time with her beloved nieces and nephews, whom she cherished deeply.
Michal graduated from Louisville High School before attending Georgia Southern University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in English and Journalism. She began her teaching career in Burke County and then finished her career at Screven County high school as an English teacher. Teaching was not simply her profession—it was her passion. She absolutely loved her students and dedicated 30 years of her life to shaping young minds through the Burke County and Screven County Board of Educations.
After spending many treasured years in Sylvania, Michal and William, the love of her life, later moved to the Augusta area to be closer to family. Together they built a life filled with laughter, love, and adventure. They enjoyed camping, spending time at the lake, and boating with family and friends both before and after retirement.
More than anything, Michal was known for her generous heart. She was always the first to step forward to help anyone in need, offering kindness, encouragement, and unwavering support. Family members often credited Michal as the peacemaker of the family. She always wanted everyone to get along and cared deeply about keeping the family close. With her passing, the family feels they have lost not only the glue that held them together, but truly the heart of the family.
Michal will be remembered for her love of family, her devotion to her students, her adventurous spirit, and her giving heart. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know and love her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Owen Godbee, her parents, Ann Willie Barfield and George D. Barfield, and her brothers, Wayne A. Barfield and Larry K. Barfield.
She is survived by her sister, JoAnn Hayes Winslow; her stepchildren, Bill (Becky) Godbee and Tonya (Kevin) Posey; step-grandchildren, Taylor (Ajay) Roach, Lauren Davis, Liam, Mason, and Rhys Godbee; and step-great-granddaughters, Ellie and Emmie Roach. She also leaves several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of Hospice Services of Georgia for the care, comfort, and support they provided during this difficult time.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 P.M. until the service.
