Mignon Beatrice Shell Chambers passed away on March 31, 2026 after a long struggle with dementia. She was predeceased by her husband John M. Chambers, and is survived by her daughters, Kim and Liz, as well as 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Her one surviving sibling is Ruby Melzer of Newport News, Virginia.
Mrs. Chambers was the youngest of 7 children born to James Gordon Shell and Elizabeth Matilda Sealy in Randolph County, Georgia. She spent her childhood in rural Georgia and would remain at heart a country girl to the end of her days, finding joy in all things that grow, from snap beans to sunflowers. When she was a teenager, the family moved to the town of Americus, Georgia, which her inexperienced eyes saw as a booming metropolis, causing her to declare that she was sure she would never be able to see the entire place.
It was in the local high school that she came across a handsome young man called John Chambers, who would become her husband of nearly 64 years. Those years brought homes in Ohio and Georgia, the births of 2 daughters, and multiple grandchildren who gave them a reason to go on the long road trips that they both so enjoyed. And like any good Southern woman, she could cook up a storm. Anyone who ever had a bite of one of her biscuits, which her husband referred to as pastry, experienced a little bit of heaven. They were simply unforgettable.
Some of Mrs. Chambers’ favorite things were books, the mountains of North Georgia, suppers from Peggy’s in Wrens, Southern Gospel music, and all babies, whether related to her or not. In their final years together, her husband cared for her around the clock as dementia slowly took away all those favorite things and more. Her family finds comfort in knowing they are finally together again, well, whole, and happy.
The family would also like to thank the many caregivers and hospice workers who helped care for Mrs. Chambers. We appreciate their loving care and concern for her as they helped her be comfortable during her long illness.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 16, 2026 from 10:00-11:00 am at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Home, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA. There will be a graveside service following at 11:30 am at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Rd., Augusta, GA.
