Augusta, GA - Mildred Cohen Coleman, 67, slipped into the loving arms of her Savior on January 13, 2021 from complications with Covid-19 and multiple myeloma at University Hospital. Mildred bravely fought through many standard and trailblazing treatments for her diseases. Mildred loved life but loved her Savior more.
Mildred was born on January 4, 1954 at University Hospital in Augusta. She was the oldest of 4 children born to Mimi and Porter Cohen. She was raised in Waynesboro, GA, graduated from Edmond Burke Academy and attended the University of Georgia. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She taught in both private and public schools in Waynesboro, GA. In 1977, Mildred married Charles Coleman and for the remainder of her life, built and provided a wonderful home for her adoring husband and 4 wonderful children. Her life until the time of her death was centered around her faith, family, and friends.
Mildred was a founding member of the Open-Door Sunday School Class of Trinity on the Hill Methodist and for over 30 years a loyal member of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta and a member of Covenanters Sunday School Class. She was active for many years in various capacities at Westminster Schools of Augusta. She was also a member of All Seasons Garden Club.
Mildred was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine Scardato and mother, Mimi Cohen.
She is survived by her husband: Dr. Charles Coleman, of 43 wonderful years and their four girls: Mimi Grinalds (Allen), Katherine Johnson (Brown), Mary Charles Snoddy (Mark), and Sarah Coleman, all of Augusta; 12 grandchildren: Allen Grinalds, Charlie Grinalds, Porter Grinalds, Mimi Barrett Grinalds, Southy Grinalds, Edwin Grinalds, Millie Johnson, Sims Johnson, George Johnson, Jones Johnson, Sadie Snoddy, and Margaret Snoddy; two stepchildren, Chili Coleman (Sarah), and Jane Bray Sidler (David).
Mildred is additionally survived by her father, Porter Cohen, of Waynesboro, sister: Mary Wills (John) of Thomson; brother: Jim Cohen (Debbie) of Lawrenceville; sister-in-law: Sadie Maguire (Sam) as well at 8 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Franks and Dr. Mike Hearon officiating. The family understands if you are unable to attend so the service will be available via live stream at www.youtube.com/user/FirstPresAug , however, those in attendance are asked to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Interment will follow in Historic Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro, GA at 1:30 P.M. Pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Green, Dr. Stan Smith, Dr. Shelley Griffin, Dr. James B. Davis, Dr. J. Ben Deal, Barrett Wills, Charles Wills, and Hank Cohen.
The family request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Westminster Schools of Augusta, First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, or the Myeloma Program Fund at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (checks payable to Winship Cancer Institute), 1762 Clifton Road, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322.
