AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest at her residence, Tuesday, February 3, 2009, Mrs. Hazel Matthews Lockhart, 86, wife of the late William Walker "Pete" Lockhart.

Affectionately known for years as "Ms. Hazel" she was a native and lifelong resident of the Augusta area. A graduate of Tubman School at 17, she attended a year of Business College until she was old enough to enter nursing school. She graduated from the Barrett School of Nursing in 1944. She was a retired registered nurse retiring from Gracewood School and Hospital in 1984 and was a member of Warren Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School class.

Family members include her daughter: Gail Simon McGahee and husband Steve of Dearing, GA; a son: Roswell Joseph "Joey" Simon of Augusta; 3 grandchildren: Jason Crump (Kathy) of Martinez, Neil Simon (Lori) of Evans and Kristi Simon of Augusta; 1 step-grandson: Ryan McGahee (Stacie) of Grovetown; 3 great-grandchildren: Meghan, Cierra and Trevor Simon; 4 step great-grandchildren: Katlyn, Brittany and Dyllan Martin and Robert McGahee; a cousin: Margie Hughes of Macon, GA and a very special friend: Kay Mendenhall.

Mrs. Lockhart was predeceased by her husbands: Roswell Lombard Simon and W.W. "Pete" Lockhart.

A loving, encouraging mother and friend to her children she was a devoted Christian who loved to spend time outdoors working in her yard.

A graveside service will be held Monday, February 9, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Dave Dillard officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the residence: 2520 Carriage Creek in Alexander Commons, Augusta.

Memorials may be made to the Old Sanctuary Renovation Project at Warren Baptist Church, 3203 Washington Rd., Augusta, GA 30907.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Trinity Hospice for their care and encouragement during this time. A special thanks to Nicole, Connie, Mary, Cindy and Dexter for their friendship and affection. Mama would have loved you all.
