Richard John Dermody, Jr.

Evans, GA – Richard John Dermody Jr. (Dick) entered into rest on January 28, 2026 surrounded by his family and caregiver, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 76. Dick was the loving husband of Candice Cohick Dermody for over 50 years.

Born on September 5, 1949, Dick was the eldest son of Richard and Lorraine Dermody. Dick is preceded in death by his father Richard John Dermody Sr., his mother Lorraine Kazik Dermody, brother Gregory Dermody and his father-in-law Dick Cohick and mother-in-law Betty Cohick.

In addition to his beloved wife, Dick is survived by his daughter Lauren Burke Garren (Bryan); grandson Cameron Peter Garren; sisters Maggie Dermody and Patty Gregorich (Bob); and numerous nieces and nephews and his loving friends. Dick was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and “Bumpa”.

A true lover of life with an adventurous spirit, he always met the day with a glass half full attitude and was never afraid to try new things or experiences. He loved life and was a lifelong learner. He never met a stranger; was the first person at a party and the last to leave. He loved traveling the world, sailing, climbing mountains and reading. Dick was born in Milwaukee, WI and shortly thereafter his family relocated to Newport, RI where his dad was stationed as a Naval officer for many years. He was a graduate of the De La Salle Academy in Newport RI and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. After college he proudly served in the U.S. Peace Corps in the 1970’s with his longtime love, Candice, teaching English in Afghanistan before moving to Tehran, Iran, where they worked for two years for Bell Helicopter. They spent many years overseas traveling the world, before settling in Washington D.C. where they had their daughter, Lauren and worked on numerous government contracts supporting the U.S. Navy.

Dick relocated his family to Augusta, GA in 1990 to pursue a new career at Savannah River Site as a training manager and administrative manager for the engineering department of the Savannah River National Lab (SRNL) which he retired from in 2017. Upon retirement, Dick quickly found his new “second home” at the Augusta Sailing Club which he visited nearly every day. He loved his sailboat and the Sailing Club almost as much as he loved his family.

A special thanks to his caregivers Netty Sedduth, Evonne Adams and Trinity Health Care, especially nurse Ansleigh Yawn.

In lieu of a memorial, a celebration of life will be held at the Augusta Sailing Club in late spring. All that knew and loved him are welcome. A notification to family and friends will be sent out when the date is confirmed.

In remembrance, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Augusta Sailing Club, PO Box 1938, Evans, GA 30809 in his honor.
