Augusta, GA – Walter Campbell, Jr. “Butch”, affectionately known as “Butchie Baby” entered into his eternal rest November 8, 2025 with his son Rusty and daughter Tracye by his side. Butch lived a very full and satisfying life with a family who adored him. Butch was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather.
Born on September 1, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, Butch was one of three boys to his parents, Jeanette Rotchford Campbell and Walter Campbell, Sr. who he now joins in Heaven along with his loving and beautiful wife Margie “Monie” Campbell. Butch and Monie are now back dancing together as it should be. Butch is survived by brothers, Bruce Campbell and Neal Campbell. In addition, survivors include children, Rusty Campbell (Trisha), Tracye Campbell; grandchildren Jason Campbell, Katie Smith (Tyler), Meredith Carr, Halye Cohen, Alexandra Godsey (Colten); great grandchildren, Parker Campbell, Reid Campbell, and Madison Moore (Connor), Jackson Smith, Campbell Smith, Griffin Carr, Gracie Godsey, Olivia Godsey; and great-great grandchild Elliott Campbell.
Moving from New York to Paducah, Ky in 1945 and settling in North Augusta, SC in 1947, Butch attended North Augusta High School.
In 1950, Butch met a beautiful young woman, Margie Fairbrother, whom he claims he knew he would marry at first sight. His dream became reality as the two married on September 29, 1956. Shortly thereafter, Butch and Margie, “Monie” welcomed into the world their two children, Rusty Campbell in 1957 and Tracye Campbell in 1960.
In 1974, the family moved from North Augusta, SC to Martinez, GA where they built a home within West Lake Country Club. Years later in the late 1980’s. Margie and Butch moved to Evans, Ga on Deerwood Lane, and then transitioned to a smaller home in Jones Creek.
To say Butch loved the outdoors is an understatement! His enjoyment of the outdoors included boating, fishing, hunting, and the LOVE of the gentleman’s game, GOLF. Butch enjoyed memberships at North Augusta Country Club, West Lake Country Club, and The Augusta Country Club. He became an AGA member in 1980. Butch played golf all his life, up into his late 80’s. Rusty would frequently take his father to hit balls. The two were fierce loving competitors. Butch was a force to be reckoned with on the course and also on occasion at the gin rummy table.
Augusta’s area’s first television broadcasting facility, WJBF-TV, was established in North Augusta, and went on the air Thanksgiving Day, 1953. Butch was then a senior in high school and began working as a cameraman in 1953. He was not long in this position as he progressed from director, salesman, and then sales manager to become President of WJBF-TV in 1979. In 1980 Butch retired from WJBF-TV. His career continued with Fuqua Industries, holding prestigious positions within Cablevision of Augusta and Georgia Federal Savings and Loan. Butch dedicated 41 years to Fuqua Industries, Inc.
Rusty and Tracye and their entire family wish to share their special thanks to The Church of the Good Shepherd, Augusta, GA; as well as to The Reverend Dr. Bunny Simon Williams; The Clairborne at West Lake, Martinez, GA; Trinity Hospice, Martinez, GA; Piedmont Hospital, Summerville Campus Hospice Unit, Augusta, GA. Each and all have served Butch and the family in ways too numerous to count—but each instance of support was always deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Burial service will be conducted later in a private family only celebration on Edisto Island, SC.
Should you be moved to honor Butch, in lieu of flowers the family suggests that you make contributions to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904 or to any worthy organization of your choosing.
