Walter Robert Hixon, Sr.

It is with bittersweet emotions that we announce the passing of Walter Robert Hixon, Sr. on January 23, 2026 at the age of 100 years. Sadness in the loss of someone who was loved dearly and will be missed, but happiness in knowing that he is with his “Good, Good Lord” and, once again, with his “Miss” Charlotte Ann.

Known to many as “Walt,” he was a WWII Navy Veteran T-1C, who served from the beginning of the war in 1942, until late October 1947. He sailed on several ships during that time, but it seems that the USS Tingey was his favorite.

Walter was also known as Daddy, Granddaddy, “Brother.” He was the son of the late Robert Reid Hixon and the late Lucile Lunceford Crook. He was the brother of Jack Hixon, who is also a proud Navy veteran and the patriarch of his beautiful family. Walter was predeceased by his sisters, Christine Spires and Jackie Green. Walter was married in 1946 to Montine Hamilton Hixon. Together, they had four children, Walter Robert Hixon, Jr. “Robbie,” and Bedelia Hixon Parkes, “Dee,” both living. Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Kathryn Hixon Allred, “Kathy,” and son, Benjamin Reid Hixon, “Bennie.” Having worked with friends in their finance businesses, Walter and Montine established their own “Modern Finance Company” in Augusta.

Later, following the end of their marriage, Walter moved to Savannah, Georgia and returned to the “Business of Finance” where he met Charlotte Reynolds Willis, who later became his wife, “Charlotte Ann.” With their marriage he gained another family; Hall Willis, who became his third son and today lives in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also, part of his new family were Brenda Willis Huggins and Deborah Willis now deceased.

Walter also leaves behind many grandchildren; many, many great-grandchildren; and the beginning of another generation – great great-grandchildren.

Charlotte passed away June, 15, 2011 with Walter by her side. He remained in Savannah until making the decision to return to Augusta in 2016 where he lived quite independently.

In 2019 he moved to Washington Commons Independent Living in Evans, Georgia. During the following years, one of his favorite hobbies or past times was playing Poker twice a week. However, his Very Favorite thing to do was to have Robbie pick him up and drive him to McDonald’s for his Gotta-Have-It breakfast – a Sausage, Egg and Cheese McGriddle with a side order of sausage gravy and small cup of decaf coffee.

Daddy enjoyed living at WC and was very thankful for anything and everything that was done for him. During the last few years as his health began to decline, both he and our family grew more and more dependent on his wonderful Care Givers from Right at Home. They have become our Third Family and we feel so blessed by their presence in our lives. With that in mind, we take this opportunity to thank them. We thank you, dear care givers, for your care and concern, your kindness and prayers, and the Heart-Felt Love you have shown for Daddy and for all of us. As a song once said: “You’re Simply The Best!”

Those who work at Washington Commons now and those from the past, we thank you, also. Daddy often spoke of how hard you work. He was right. We hope you know that you are appreciated.

Finally, to the Beautiful Residents, past and present, of WC we thank you for your smiles, greetings, concern, prayers, kindness, waves, laughter, “dancing,” and All the Things that Make YOU ~ YOU. You are treasured. “You Touched Us. We Have Grown.” Walter’s Family with love.
