William "Pete" L. Whatley

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, William Ludwick Whatley, 89, husband of Elaine Tidwell Whatley of over 63 years.

Pete was a native of Augusta, Georgia, graduating from Academy of Richmond County and attended the University of South Carolina as well. He graduated with a Masters of Science and Economics and was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Key by the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. Upon graduation, Pete took a “part-time” position as a professor at Augusta College, now known as Augusta University, and retired 30 years later with the Designation of Professor Emeritus for his long -standing dedication to his students. Pete was an advisor, as well as unofficial advisor, to hundreds of students through his years at Augusta College. His two favorite places on Earth were wherever he could quail hunt and fishing on his dock and creeks around Beaufort, SC area. He was definitely his own man and made a significant impact on his family, friends, students and all who knew him. Pete will be deeply missed. Geek Geek and Who Knock; those who knew him well will understand this.

Surviving family members in addition to his wife include his sons: Dr. William L. Whatley, Jr. (Michelle), Charles E Whatley (Lisa) and David Whatley (Jennifer); seven grandchildren, Ben, Joel (Jackie), Charles, Corinne, Mason, Reece and Neil; and three great grandchildren, Muni, Sawyer and Mazz. He was preceded in death by his parents, William O and Loretta Whatley, as well as his sister, Ann Whatley Lee and her husband, John Lee.

The funeral service will be held Monday, October 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark Methodist Church with Rev. Thurman Norville officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
