    MARTINEZ, Ga. - Entered into rest Monday, January 5, 2009, Mrs. Betty Smith Gooding, 76, wife of the late William H. Gooding, Sr.

    Mrs. Gooding was a native of Tatnall County, GA but resided most of her life in the Augusta area. Early in her business career she worked for the FBI as a stenographer in Savannah where she met her late husband William H. Gooding, Sr. In 1968 they moved to Augusta where she began an 18 year career with IBM. She worked for almost 20 years in the scoring center at the Masters Tournament. Mrs. Gooding was a 40 year member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Gooding was also a member of the Green Meadows Country Club and loved golf. She was a devoted daughter and doting grandmother.

    Family members include her son: William Henry Gooding, Jr. (Nancy) of Evans; daughters: Elizabeth Gooding Reiss of Charleston, SC, Gilda Gooding Curry (Nathan) of Woodstock; 6 grandchildren; Alan Craig Musser, Jr., Benjamin Rogers Gooding, Nathan Charles Curry, Jr., Matthew William Gooding, Kyle Patrick Curry, and Madeleine Grace Curry; great-grandson: Curren Musser and brother: Larry Smith of Hahira, GA.

    Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 11:30 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Jake Malone officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Interment will follow at 4:00 P.M. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery near Claxton, GA.

    Mr. Louis Mulherin, Jr.

    AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Monday, January 5, 2009, at University Hospital, Mr. Louis Mulherin, Jr. 76, husband of 55 years to Carolyn Butler Mulherin.

    Mr. Mulherin a son of the late Louis Mulherin and Marian Haslam Mulherin. He was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta. He graduated from Boys Catholic High in 1949.He graduated from Springhill College in 1953, having played on the golf team. He was a 1st Lt. in the US Army 47th Artillary and the Medical Services Corps. He began work at Mulherin Lumber Company, a business his parents founded in 1937, at the age of 14 rising to President and CEO. He was a very active member of his church, St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. He was also a very active in a number of other organizations and groups in Augusta.

    Family members in addition to his wife include his children: Louis Mulherin III (Rita), Mark Mulherin (Susan), Patricia M. Moss (Ben), Margaret M. Watkins (Robert), Elizabeth M. Welsh (Brian); grandchildren: Courtney Mulherin, Mari Anne Mulherin, Margaret Mulherin, Caroline Mulherin, Brooke Lovett, Benjamin Moss IV, Austin Moss, Elizabeth Moss, Robert Watkins, Jr., Patricia Watkins, Maguire Welsh, Haslam Welsh, Louis Mulherin Welsh and Liam Welsh; sister: Marian Mulherin Grady (Don) and many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.

    The Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church with Fr. John Lyons celebrant. Honorary pallbearers will be C. Griggs Wheeler, Peter M. Menk, Lenson Neal, John F. Markwalter, Dr. Gary B. Williamson, Linzy Rolland, Sean P. Grady and Michael V. Grady. Private burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

    Mrs. Joyce Hartey Scavullo

    AUGUSTA, Ga. - Joyce Hartey Scavullo, wife of Charles John Scavullo, entered into rest Sunday, January 4, 2009 on her 79th birthday. Mrs. Scavullo was a loving mother and grandmother and had been a member of St. Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church since 1972. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Hartey.

    Prior to moving to Augusta, Joyce and Charles lived in Great Neck, New York. She was active in church and school activities in Long Island as well as in Augusta.

    Survivors in addition to her husband include 2 sons: Charles (Mary Helen) Scavullo of Augusta and Frank Scavullo of Charleston, SC; 5 daughters: Brenda (Ed) Durant of Augusta, Joyce Kelley of Oakland, CA, Alice (Mark) Atchison of Savannah, Katherine Ann (Phil) Jesse of Augusta, Marie (John) Seitz of Augusta; her sister: Nancy Gillies of Cutchogue, NY and 10 grandchildren: Alex, Katie and Blase Durant, Dylan and Ian Jesse, Francesca Kelley, Jackie Atchison, Jackson, Nicky and Carly Seitz.

    Mr. Arlie M. Bass

    AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Thursday, January 1, 2009, at University Hospital, Mr. Arlie M. Bass, 88, beloved husband of the late Bertha Holsonback Bass.

    Mr. Bass was a native of Clarks Hill, SC and had resided in Augusta for 49 years. Mr. Bass served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration. He was a member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion Post 178 and the CSRA Computer Society. Mr. Bass was also a charter member of Green Meadows Country Club, past President of South Augusta Optimist Club, and an avid Amateur Radio Operator (Ham). Mr. Bass was a member of Fleming Baptist Church and the Martin Cave Sunday School Class.

    Family members include his son: Dr. J.     Mr. Charles T. Blackston

    NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Entered into rest on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Heartland Hospice, Mr. Charles T. Blackston, husband of 58 years to Georgia D. Blackston of North Augusta. Additional family members include his son: Charles T. Blackston, Jr. and wife Kerry; daughters: Vickie Corder and husband James; Pam Wheatley and husband Steve; grandchildren: Cal Forrest, Jr., Lauren Watson, Shea Blackston, Chad Blackston, Drew Blackston, Kayla Wheatley, Dylan Wheatley; and great-grandchild: Caleigh Watson. Mr. Blackston was preceded in death by his brothers: G. H. Blackston, M.W. Blackston and sister: Annabell B. Poteet.

    Charlie was a native Atlantan, but lived most of his life in Augusta. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during WWII. After the war he returned to Augusta and worked for Lily Tulip Co. After retirement he began a career in monument sales; retiring in 2007 from Southside Monument Co. He was a longtime member of Fleming Baptist Church. More than anything else Charlie loved being with his family.

    Mr. James Emory Lewis

    Grovetown, GA.- Went home to be with the Lord at the age of 93 on Monday, December 29, 2008 at the home he shared with his wife, Lila Hensley Lewis. Mr. Lewis was born on September 3, 1915 in Crawfordville, GA. to Y.B. and Mary Lewis and spent the remainder of his life in Richmond and Columbia County. He graduated from Richmond Academy in 1933. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

    He was a member of Marvin United Methodist Church where he served and was Chairman of many church committees including Methodist Men, Sunday school teacher, Usher, and FLP Senior Group.

    He served in the United States Army during WW II in the Army Airways Communication System from 1942 until 1946. His overseas tour was in the Philippines and New Guinea where he received several decorations including the Would War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, and the American Service Medal.

    He was endowed with a friendly, vibrant personality and never met a stranger. These attributes embraced his sales profession. He worked at Phoenix Oil Company for approximately 30 years in sales until his retirement in 1984.

    Family members in addition to his devoted wife of 53 years include daughters: Julie L. Davis and husband Mike and Sherry L. Guillot and husband David; granddaughters: Lindsey Davis and Taylor Davis; great-grandson: Weston Davis Lee all of Grovetown.

    Funeral services will be held Friday, January 2, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Marvin United Methodist Church with Rev. John Giglio officiating. Interment will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.     Mr. Billy E. Riggins

    Augusta, GA.- Entered into rest Sunday, December 28, 2008, Mr. Billy E. Riggins, age 70 husband of Mrs. Betty J. Riggins.

    Mr. Riggins was of the Baptist faith and he retired in 1999 as a mechanic.

    Family members in addition to his wife include daughters: Robin Howard and husband James, Kimberly Newcomb and husband Michael, and Patricia Miller and husband Glenn; grandchildren: Jamie L. Howard, Kaitlyn Miller, Stephanie Newcomb, and Jennifer Stewart and husband Preston; great grandsons: Zachary Miller and Tristan Miller. He will also be missed by his four footed companions Tippie and Lu Lu.

    Mr. Edward Hammond Dunbar, Sr.

    Augusta, GA.-Entered into rest Sunday, December 28, 2008, Mr. Edward Hammond Dunbar, age 83, husband of Mrs. Beverly Bell Dunbar.

    Mr. Dunbar was a life long resident of Augusta and the Manager/Owner of WBBQ Radio Station from 1947 until 1987. Mr. Dunbar received a number of awards including the Presidential Achievement Award from Paine College, the DiGamma Kappa "Pioneer Georgia Broadcaster" Award, the Silver Medal Award from the Augusta Advertising Club, and the "Louis Harris Award" from the West Augusta Rotary Club. He was featured in the book "In Search of Excellence in Broadcasting" and served as the primary consultant for New Zealand Public Radio's Station Management Template. He was a member of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. He served on the Mutual Broadcasting System’s Advisory Board, the ABC Radio Contemporary Network Advisory Board, and National Association of Broadcasters Medium Market Radio Board.

    At the age of 16, became the youngest chemist for the Buckeye Cotton Oil Company. Upon turning 18, he volunteered for duty in the Armed Forces and was assigned to the U.S. Navy Seabees. As a member of the 123rd Naval C.B. Battalion, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater on Midway Island and participated in the Philippine Liberation Operation.

    He was the voice of Trinity-On-The-Hill United Methodist Church's Broadcast ministries and the voice of Michael Guido's Evangelistic Television Ministries Seed for the Sower, which is heard around the world. He was a member of Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church since 1937 and he served as a Sunday-school teacher for young adults, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

    He was the Vice-Chairman of the Augusta/Richmond County Human Relations Commission. He was a Board Member of the Bethlehem Community Center and a member of the Richmond County Jury Commission. He was a President of the Garden City Lion's Club, a board member of Lions Light House for the Blind, the Better Business Bureau, and the Augusta Merchants Association.

    Family members in addition to his wife include sons: Edward Hammond Dunbar, Jr. and William Franklin Dunbar; daughters: Deborah Bell Dunbar and DeAnn Dunbar Yost; grandchildren: Andrew Ryan Dunbar, Geoffery Corrin Yost, Aubrey Leigh Yost, Kailey Elizabeth Yost, Avery Dunbar Yost, Lee Elizabeth Dunbar, and William Harrison Dunbar.     Mrs. Minnie Sangster-Duck

    AUGUSTA, GA.- Entered into rest Saturday, December 27, 2008 at University Hospital, Mrs. Minnie Sangster-Duck.

    Mrs. Sangster-Duck was a life long resident of Augusta and retired after 45 years from JB White as a make-up artist and cosmetician.

    Family members include her sons: the late Joseph A. Sangster, Leon (Bud) Sangster and wife April of Grovetown, GA; daughter: Linda Sangster West and husband Jack of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren: Bryan Sangster, Karen Sangster, Christopher Sangster, and Kristen Sangster; sisters: Eunice Watkins of Evans, GA and Elsie and husband Malcolm Tootle of Belvedere, SC; 3 nieces and 1 nephew.

    Mr. William "Bill" Lewis

    William "Bill" Lewis passed away peacefully on December 24th, 2008 at the age of 89, while visiting his son in Atlanta, Ga. Bill was born on born January 24th 1919 in Crawfordville, Georgia and lived most of his life in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated from Richmond Academy in 1937 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1940. He completed Officer Candidate School and served with distinction as a First Lieutenant during WWII in the Army Air Corps as a pilot of the B-17 Flying Fortress. He returned his crew and aircraft safely after each of 50 combat missions over Europe in 1943 and 1944. This included many missions in the face of heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire and hostile fighter planes. He returned to the USA as a Flight Instructor in 1944 and resumed private life after the war concluded in 1945. He had great respect for those in military service and was a role model for the hallmark values of honor, duty, and integrity. He married Margaret Louise Marshall of Augusta in 1947 and they observed their 61st anniversary recently. Bill and Louise lived and worked in Augusta and reared their only child, David A. Cole (of Atlanta) who graduated from Richmond Academy in 1960. Bill was a businessman, primarily in construction, and ultimately in real estate development and brokerage. They were active members of the Hill Baptist Church. After his retirement in the mid-eighties, he and Louise moved to their cottage on Clark Hill Lake, in Lincoln County, Georgia, and became members of the Double Branches Baptist Church. Bill was devoted to his family and the Clark Hill cottage has been the location of countless cherished memories with extended family and friends over the years since Bill and Louise purchased the property in the early 1960's as a weekend retreat. Bill was an avid fisherman and a Life Member of Augusta Elks Lodge No. 205 B.P.O.E. Bill and Louise maintained close contact with family and friends in the Augusta area and moved to a independent living apartment near Augusta at Brandon Wilde in Evans, Georgia in 1997. Bill continued to drive his car and assist his beloved Louise up until his passing. He will be remembered as one who deeply cared for his family and many lifelong friends.

    Bill's grandmother's family came from England in 1832 and his grandfather was from Michigan. The family moved with Bill's great grandfather, Dr. G.W. Lewis, from Michigan to Monroe, Georgia in 1872. Both are buried in a Lewis family area in Greensboro, Georgia. His parents, Y. B. Lewis and Mary Elizabeth, were married for 65 years beginning in 1900. Bill was the youngest of their 6 children and he is preceded in death by; his parents; his sisters: Loretta Winfield, Willie Mae DeBeaugrine, and their spouses; his brothers: G.W. Lewis and Lloyd Lewis and their spouses.

    He is survived by his wife, their son David Cole and his wife Robyn; grandchildren: Drew and Mary Jo Cole, Allen and Andrea Williams, Rachel Cole, Amelia Cole; great-grandchildren: Brian Cole, Ethan Cole, Dylan Cole, and Foster Williams; brother and sister-in-law Emory and Lila Lewis; brother-in-law Howard Marshall, Sr. and a number of nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be held Monday, December 29, 2008 at 11 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. Honorary pallbearers – Kaspar Fulghum-- four from Battery A 214th C.A. , including Kaspar, Pete Tjovaras, Bill Britton, Alfred Spires. Also George Lewis.     Ms. Smith was a native of Blythe, GA and resided in Augusta for the past 36 years. She was a retired sitter for the elderly and a Methodist.

Mrs. LaMar retired from Murray Biscuit Company after 19 years and went on to work and retire from Dillard’s Department Store after 19 years. She was a member of the Irish American Heritage Society, and the Augusta Irish Dancers. Mrs. LaMar was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church where she served as an usher. Mrs. LaMar was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

    Mrs. Cook was a native of Warthen, GA, daughter of the late Lilly Victoria and Baxter Mills, and had lived in Augusta since 1942. She was retired from Gracewood State School and Hospital after 34 years of service. Mrs. Cook was a member of Fleming Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Barfield Sunday School class and the Young at Heart. In recent years, she attended Columbia County Christian Church and Gough Baptist Church with her daughters.

    Granny, as she was known to her family and friends, was a very caring and quiet person, a very good cook and seamstress. She put her Lord and Savior first in everything she said and did. God touched and blessed our family with such a loving and kind mother. She lived and she died trusting in her Lord and Savior.

    Mr. Wilson was a native of Pontiac, MI and had resided the past 7 years in Evans. He was a graduate of Waterford High School class of 1966 and attended Bible College in Arlington, TX. Mr. Wilson was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and retired after 20 years. He was a recipient of the Valor of Victor award, a Bronze Star for Valor; decorated over 30 times; received the Meritorious Service medal, expert marksman and expert driver. Mr. Wilson was a soul winner who loved his country very, very much and loved God more. He was a youth minister at Faith Baptist Church in Waterford, MI and is a member of Grace Baptist Church of Evans, GA. He stated “God first, family second, I am third.”

Mr. Morris was an entrepreneur who loved to work on his own. He never met a stranger and had a very giving heart. Jerry followed in his father's footsteps by being assistant chief of the Martinez Volunteer Fire Department that his father founded in the 1950's. He was a loving husband, father and "poppy" and always put family first.

She was a member of the First Families of Georgia, General Society of Mayflower Descendants, National Society, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, College Hill Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, member of the National Society Daughter of Founders and Patriots, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, Order of the Crown of Charlemagne and recipient of the Martha Washington Medal presented by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mrs. Turbyfill was an active and lifelong member of St. Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church where she was on the Interior Committee during 1992 Church Completion and Refurbishment, the Liturgy Committee, and participated in Perpetual Adoration since its inception at St. Mary's.

    Mr. Castle was a native of Troy, NY. He was a US Army veteran who retired after 22 years, served in Korea and Vietnam and also worked with the Augusta Utilities as a service representative for 30 years. Mr. Castle was a member of Burns United Methodist Church where he was past president of the Methodist Men’s group and former choir member.

    Mr. William Owens Conlon

    AUGUSTA, Ga.- Funeral services for Mr. William Owens Conlon of Augusta will be held on Monday, December 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the graveside in Westover Memorial Park with Father Michael Lubinski officiating. Mr. Conlon passed away on Friday, December 5, 2008 at Heartland Hospice of Augusta.

    Born on October 31, 1920 Mr. Conlon was a native of Augusta, Georgia, where he made his home for most of his life. He was the son of Hugh F. Conlon and Beulah Dennis Conlon, and the brother of Theodore, Maryanna, Louis Jr., and Alice, all of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, attended the University of Georgia and graduated from the Draughan School of Commerce in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a communicant of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity.

    During WW II, he served with honor in the United States Marine Corps, having enlisted in 1939. He was on the ground in campaigns at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He also served as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, South Carolina during the Korean War and his training, no doubt, is imprinted upon the military bearing of all those who graduated under his discipline.

    His loving family includes wife of 57 years, Frances Costa Conlon; daughter Carol Ann Conlon Dozier of Appling, GA.; son James Phillip Conlon and daughter-in-law Susan Conlon of Charlotte, NC; and three granddaughters, Jessica Dozier Paulos of Evans, GA., Erin Dozier of Appling GA., and Julia Conlon of Charlotte NC; one great-grandson, Landon Paulos of Evans, GA; nephew Sonny Conlon of Augusta, GA, niece Patti Conlon Mathis of Georgetown, SC; Patty Kearns Hutchinson of Dunedin, FL, and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews across the country.

    In his professional life, he retired after a long career as a staff manager at the Life of Georgia Insurance Company, and then pursued a 25-year career as a real estate appraiser. He was a member of National Association of Master Appraisers and a founder of the Georgia Chapter.

    Bill will be remembered forever as a man who loved his family, his country and his community. His humor and generosity are a legacy to all those who will miss him so dearly.

    Mr. Otis Woodard Harrison

    AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Otis Woodard Harrison, Attorney, Retired, of Augusta, died December 4, 2008. He was 85.

    The funeral will be Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 2:30 P.M. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Wheeler Road, Augusta with Rev. John Pinson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church fellowship hall. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

    Mr. Harrison, a native of Augusta, attended Public Schools; graduated from Richmond Academy, attended the University of Georgia and graduated from Lumpkin Law School with a L.L.B. Degree in 1950. He was a member of the University of GA Debate Team, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity and Chi Psi Fraternity.

    He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School; Past President of South Augusta Exchange Club; Elks Club of Augusta; past member of Augusta Country Club and Thompson Country Club; he was 1 of 4 Founders of Green Meadows Golf Club of Augusta, where he served as Secretary and Director from 1960 until his demise.

    He was a member of all Georgia Courts and Appellate Courts, U.S. District Court, US Circuit Court of Appeals, the US Supreme Court and the US Court of Military Appeals, the Augusta Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

    Mr. Harrison entered the US Maritime Service in January 1943 and was commissioned an ensign. He served in the Merchant Marines as Purser and Hospital Corpsman in the Atlantic and Pacific on Liberty and Victory ships.

    He entered the US Army in 1944 as a Private and rose to the rank of Captain.

    He served in the 88th Infantry Division in Italy (MTO) during World War II. Recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict, serving in the 4th Infantry Division and 1st Infantry Division as a Military Police Officer and Assistant Staff Judge Advocate. He was certified to serve and did serve as Law Officer, Trial and Defense Counsel of General Courts Martial in EUCOM. (Germany)

    Mr. Harrison was a partner in the Law Firm of Harris, Chance, McCracken and Harrison and Harrison and Jolles, retired in 2001, having practiced law in the Augusta area for over 50 years.

    He traveled (world wide) extensively during his later years.

    Survivors include daughter and son-in-law: Debra and Rusty Thompson of Hephzibah; sons and daughter-in-law: Otis M. and Karen Harrison of Varnville, SC, Daniel W. Harrison, Albuquerque, NM; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law: Harold W. and Geri Harrison of Palo Alto, CA and sister and brother-in-law: Geraldine and George Van Lent, Worthington, OH. Mr. Harrison was preceded in death by his wives: Margarette Williamson Harrison and Mary Alice Harrison.
